Welcome in Mariemont!

This is a concise version of our French website

Mariemont is an exceptional place for a dialogue between art, culture and nature, with unique collections evoking the Orient and the Occident, the past and the present, fauna and flora.

Mariemont is, among other things: a 45 hectare park in the style of an English landscape garden, one of the most beautiful arboretums in Belgium; the ruins of Charles of Lorraine’s palace; the museum, a major work by the architect Bastin; the “Bourgeois de Calais”, by Rodin; the most beautiful collection of Tournai porcelains in the world; hundreds of works from Egypt, Greece and Rome; the monumental statue of Cleopatra (five tonnes); frescoes from the villa of Boscoreale (Pompeii); the Ares from the Somzée collection and numerous others masterpieces of Classical Antiquity; the most complete collection of Chinese antiquities in Belgium; a tea house and numerous collections from Japan, Korea and Vietnam; archaeological and historical collections covering everything about the region; extremely rare manuscripts and handwritten documents, thousands of precious books; a research library with 100,000 volumes; and many other treasures.

STATEMENT CONCERNING UKRAINE - SUSPENSION OF THE EXECUTION OF COLLABORATIONS WITH THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

As scientific research institution of the French Community of Belgium, the Royal Museum of Mariemont aligns its position regarding the armed conflict in Ukraine with that of the Management Committee of Belspo (Belgian Science Policy Office, composed of ten federal scientific institutions (RMI, RBISA, ROB, KBR, State Archives, RBINS, Africa Museum, RIAP, RMAH and RMFAB) Belnet and the central administration).

The Domain and Royal Museum of Mariemont invites you to familiarize yourself with Ukrainian culture, in support of endangered Ukrainian heritage and in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Several Ukrainian books are currently on sale in the Museum Shop. Profits from the sale of these works will be donated to the 12-12 consortium.

We wish to express our full and complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people, with a particular thought towards our colleagues from the scientific and cultural community. We stress, beyond the absolute priority which must be given to the human lives, the need to respect and protect Ukrainian cultural and natural heritage in this ongoing conflict.

We suspend the implementation of cooperation contracts with Russia. We hope, that as soon as the geopolitical situation allows, we can re-establish constructive bonds with members of the Russian scientific and cultural community who are open to a free and democratic debate on ideas.
